Cathedral of Pongau
This twin-towered parish church with Gothic wooden carvings is the symbol of St Johann. It was first mentioned in writing in 924. After the market fire in 1855, the church was totally rebuilt (1855-1861). The neo-Gothic altars contain several late Gothic figures.
The church’s powerful position above the Salzach valley and its majestic interior make it an extraordinary example of ecclesiastical architecture and have given it the popular nickname “Pongauer Dom” (Dom = cathedral), although the church was never the seat of a bishop.
