Großglockner Hochalpenstraße (mountain road)
About 48km away.
The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße leads to one of the most wonderful natural landscapes in the world, the Hohe Tauern National Park. Within the space of a few kilometres, you pass through all the climate and vegetation zones to be found between Austria and the Arctic – meadows, forests, mountains, cliffs and ice.
A bit closer to heaven.
This most famous of mountain roads ends just before the main highlights of the Hohe Tauern National Park – the highest mountain and the bigger glacier in Austria, the Großglockner (3,798m) and the Pasterze.
On the way there, you can experience the equivalent of a 4000km journey to the Arctic. On the 1,500m ascent to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, you will cross all the vegetation zones from cornfields to eternal ice.
In various exhibitions and events along the Hochalpinstraße, you can learn everything about Austria’s highest mountain.
